Longevity
Longevity also can be thought of as health or wellness, or healthspan.
We never use the word lifespan when talking about longevity. Leave that for the doctors and the scientists. To truly experience and celebrate our Thrivespan, we need to take action to attend to our physical selves before it is too late. Our muscle mass and muscle strength decrease with age. Our cardiovascular health declines, our cognition wanes, our strength and stability leave us. Well, if we let it. Incredible longevity physicians such as Dr. Peter Attia show us how simple movement exercise, Zone 2 aerobic exercise, strength training (yes, strength-training into our 80s is important) and stability work is very important as we hit our forties and beyond. No matter what stage we are at in life, it's important that we start building wellness habits, but it is never, ever too late to start. One core tenet of Thrivespan™, is that we should not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
For a few of us, improvements in longevity involve improving from an excellent athlete to elite. For the vast majority of us, simply walking 20 minutes is an exponential improvement over sitting on the couch.
Example:
As we hike in the mountains, our heart rate increases, our VO2 levels maximize, our muscles move and our balance improves. These are all aspects and examples of longevity.
